Project Overview
Tarner Community Project is a charity dedicated to running children and young people’s services in the Tarner area of Brighton in partnership with the local community. Tarner Community Project has established an excellent reputation for delivering exciting projects with children and young people who are currently marginalised for whatever reason. We are based in a community building in Tarner Park where we currently run our children’s activities and several youth projects in and around the local area.
Aims
To alleviate deprivation and poverty around the Tarner area of Brighton and Hove. To offer support to children and young people and their families living in the local community and affected by poverty, deprivation, criminal behaviour, substance misuse and lack of opportunity.
Objectives
· To provide high quality, out of school play opportunities for 4-11 year olds in the local community.
· To ensure that there are subsidised out of school play opportunities, for those children whose parents are unwaged or on part-time wages.
· To provide high quality information and low cost activities and events for young people in need or at risk, 10 – 19 years old, in the local area.
· To run peer-led and community-led initiatives.
National and local context
All our work is informed by and delivers on national and regional strategies. These include:
· Early Years Foundation Stage
· National Play Work Principles
· OFSTED
· Local Safeguarding Board
· The Brighton & Hove Youth Collective.
Youth Services
Youth Clubs - Weekly youth clubs are run at the Phoenix Community Centre and Tarner Play Base offering a wide range of activities, life skills and 1:1 support for around 150 young people aged 8 -19.
Detached Work
Young people are contacted and consulted on their needs, concerns and interests through detached street sessions, doorstep enquiries and referrals.
Holiday Activity Programme
A varied programme of school holiday activities, trips, sports and craft activities is planned with young people. The project participates in B-Fest, the youth element of the Brighton Festival.
Sports activities
Weekly football sessions delivered by a coach from the Brighton and Hove Albion.
Community Support
Tarner Park & Play Base
Tarner Community Project continues to be a key supporter of the efforts to make Tarner Park safer and more accessible to the community working with local residents, the police, local councillors, the local authority, social workers, schools and parents/carers. Tarner Community Project manages the Play Base in Tarner Park. This is a unique facility in the area, as it is the only community room with a green outdoor space attached.
We also support other local community groups and manage the Tarner Festival, a summer celebration that brings community groups, local networks and residents together.
Beneficiaries
We work with children and young people and families living in the Tarner area, in the Queens Park ward of Brighton and Hove.
Tarner was a Neighbourhood Renewal priority area and is one of the most deprived in Brighton and Hove. It has high levels of multiple deprivations. This means that there are relatively high numbers of people whose life chances are much lower than in other areas of Brighton and Hove. Within the Tarner area there is a smaller area made up of Kingswood & Milner and Albion Hill flats known as a Super Output Area. Super Output Areas are in the 3% of most deprived areas nationally.
Issues that have been identified include: inter-racial problems, lack of safety, bad relationships between young people and the local community, lack of accessible activities and places to go, high levels of school truancy and exclusion, and young people being at high risk of becoming involved in anti-social behaviour, petty crime, grooming, vandalism and substance misuse.
We work to alleviate many of these issues directly through the services we provide and targeted partnership working to support children, young people and families. We offer safe open access spaces, advice and guidance.
The Organisation
Tarner Community Project has an experienced and able staff team who have built an excellent reputation as a high quality children’s and youth service through their hard work, dedication and belief in the project.
We have 6 trustees and the operations of the charity are managed by the CEO.
Play workers are qualified at NVQ level 2 or 3 (for senior roles) and Youth Workers are qualified or working towards NVQs in Youth Work. All staff hold additional child protection training, food hygiene, first aid and ongoing specialist training.
